A group of workers carrying iron sheets that weigh several tons and require physical strength to carry them, in the area of shipbuilding and maintenance docks in Bangladesh, which has become a major industry in recent years. Bangladesh has more than 200 shipbuilding companies, most of them concentrated in Dhaka, Chittagong, Barisal, Khulna and the banks of the Buriganga River on the outskirts of Dhaka. The largest and most famous shipyard in Bangladesh is the Chittagong Ship and Breaking Yard, which employs about 15,000 workers for about $5 a day, dismantling huge cargo ships as well as constructing new ships from parts. Workers can be seen with torches and welding equipment tearing huge pieces of metal from the vessels, without eye, hand or face protection. Other workers will be found climbing the tall ships on rickety ladders or wandering along the high edges of the ships’ decks, the only thing keeping them from falling is their balance, and they also have their own little workshops off to the side and build propellers and other ship parts.
